Can I work during my studies?

Students are allowed to work during their studies in Germany. It is a way to help finance your living expenses. Please be aware that German language knowledge (at least B1) is typically necessary when looking for a job. There are many possibilities for the so called mini-jobs, mainly in the service sector or as a student assistant at the university. Such positions are normally characterized by a weekly workload of approx. 10-15 hours. If you work more, your study performance may be affected. By law, a monthly income of up to 450 (5400 per year) is free of taxes. Citizens of the European Union have completely free access to the job market. For other international students, a student visa allows its holder to work 120 full days or 240 half days per year. If you are willing to work more, you should apply for a special permit at the “Agentur für Arbeit" (Federal Employment Agency) or talk to the resonsible assistant in the International Office, building 18.

Is an internship included in my study program?

A compulsory internship is not scheduled during the bachelor's and master's program at o9ur faculty. However, you have the opportunity to complete a voluntary internship during the a semester break. This is highly recommended by the faculty. Especially during the longer semester break in the summer, students may do an internship and apply the theoretically knowledge in the job market.

Please be informed, that it is not possible by law, to gain credit points from an internship for the regarding study program, as it is not included in the study program regulation and program structure.

How can I finance my studies?

University scholarships (the Deutschlandstipendium) are available from the beginning of the third semester for extraordinary students (academically and voluntary social engagement). However, there also exist certain job offers for students on campus from the third semester on.

Apart from the Deutschlandstipendium, talented students have the chance to be awarded a scholarship from a foundation. Such foundations usually finance international students for their master’s studies. You can find complete, detailed information about your opportunities and eligibility at: http://www.mystipendium.de/

BAföG (Berufsausbildungsförderungsgesetz) is state provided assistance for students, whose parents cannot finance their studies. It amounts up to 653 per month and must be paid back with no interest following the completion of your studies. It is mainly available to German students, but foreign students also have the chance to apply, if they meet certain criteria.
General information and application forms can be found here:

According to the applicable labor regulations for foreign students, a specific amount of days per year may be worked without the need for a special work permit. Your financial planning should be realistic as it is unlikely that you will be able to support yourself during studies by working. The possibility of having a job alongside studies is limited. Our students are expected to concentrate on the demanding study program. For further explanations about work permission please check out the DAAD homepage.
