Enrollment

What is the student enrollment procedure?

Registration must be completed in person during the time period (latest until October 15th) specified in the study admission letter. The admission letter will also provide information concerning the necessary documents which you must present for registration.

Please check also the Campus Service Center - your first contact regarding your studies (registration issues)!

Adequate proof of existing health insurance is one of the prerequisites for enrollment at our university. Health insurance can be easily purchased at any time at one of the insurance companies near our campus (i.e., TK Techniker-Krankenkasse, AOK, or another). The insurance coverage is at a student's rate and for a full-time of your stay.

What about health insurance?

All residents in Germany are obligated to have health insurance, as well as all students in Germany. You are free to choose a statutory health insurance plan, for example, the Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse (AOK), or one provided by a private health insurance company. Health insurance premiums are currently approximately €120 per month. As a result, doctor visits, hospital stays, and medical treatments generally require no additional fees or payments.

Student rates are only valid for students less than 30 years of age and during the first 14 semesters of study. For all other cases, health insurance is not available at the student tariff, but at higher rates. Network for International Students DEGIS TK Health Insurance for international students

Students coming from the European Union States and from other countries where international insurance agreements exist are able to claim health insurance benefits in Germany without being insured locally. This possibility exists whenever students are insured by other family members or by an individual health insurance policy in their home country. In these cases, policyholders must certify their right to health insurance benefits by means of a special form that must be submitted (upon arrival in the Federal Republic of Germany) to a local office of the chosen health insurance. Your health insurance company will then issue a German Health Insurance Certificate.

We do recommend the purchase of third-party liability insurance as well. It is furthermore sensible to insure your belongings so that you can be reimbursed if they get damaged or stolen.

EU-Citizens:

Students from the EU, or from countries that have entered into a Social Security Agreement with Germany, may bring their "European Health Insurance Card" (EHIC) which they receive in their home country. Please be informed that it's highly recommended to change this EU card immediately after arrival in Magdeburg at the German health insurance of your choice.

What type of visa do I need?

You will need a visa to enter Germany unless you have the nationality of an EU/EER country, the United States, Canada, or others. Immigration regulations are always subject to change. Therefore, it is necessary to contact the German embassy in your home country to obtain specific information on entry requirements as soon as possible. Experience has shown that the visa processing times vary considerably from country to country, ranging from 2 weeks to 4 months. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic, visa processing times may take much longer.

If you would like to study in Germany and require a visa, please apply for a student visa. This student visa has a validity of 3-6 months. Please do not travel to Germany on a tourist visa, since you cannot apply for a residence permit for studies on the basis of a tourist visa!

OVGU Visa Information

Is it sufficient to use the visa which is valid for three months?

Yes, German embassies and consulates only issue three to six months entry visas. You must go to the local Foreigners Immigration Department (Ausländerbehörde) in Magdeburg at the latest six weeks before your visa expires and apply for a residence permit to cover the intended length of your study program.

Which formalities must I complete in Magdeburg?

Right after arriving in Magdeburg, you need to go to the city hall (Bürgerbüro) to register. You need to have a housing contract for that, as well as other documents.

You will need a valid residence permit for your stay for studies in Magdeburg (a student visa is only a provisional residence permit valid for the first 90-180 days). To apply for this permit, you must go to the Foreigners Immigration Department (Ausländerbehörde) latest 6 weeks before your visa expires and present your passport, two biometric photographs, your student identification, proof of enrollment (or the letter of admission to the university), proof of financial support (non-EU citizen has to prove ca. 860,- per month for a year), proof of accommodation, and proof of medical insurance.

The residence permit will be granted for a year or two and not longer than the scheduled duration of the study program. An extension can be applied for 14 days before the previous permit expires. A processing fee of 50-100 must be paid for each renewal. Students who receive a state grant in Germany are exempt from payment.

If an international student needs assistance in settling the above procedure, the SIMPSON team will be happy to help.

ALL IN A NUTSHELL

When does the study program begin?

Classes at our university will start in early October/ April. Please check our Academic Calendar for the start of lectures.

Preparation classes in English (bachelor math, intercultural introduction for all students enrolled in the English-taught study program of our school) will start around the 25th of September.
No summer term offer of prep classes.

During the second week of October/ first days in April, our faculty offers orientation days for first-semester students in order to welcome and guide them. The academic information meeting from the International Study Program Office/ ISP during the first week in October is obligatory for all new students of our school.

Also, we highly recommend attending the university's and faculty's orientation events, especially the SIMPSON mentoring program, which takes place at the end of September/ beginning of April annually and offers events throughout the semester.

Registration for sports classes and language studies starts on October/ April 1st. First-come, first-served rule.

Please be informed that you can register for classes only after receiving a university email account and for this, you need to have accommodation (the search takes about 2 weeks).

In order to receive these crucial details, you must register with the computer center online, or in person after your successful enrollment. Visit this link here to activate your credentials.

Are there introductory info sessions?

Yes, the Faculty of Economics and Managment takes pride in planning exciting and informative sessions during the so-called "O-Woche" (orientation week).

Information regarding the orientation week can be found in our newsletter section, as well as from the university homepage. Study -> First-Year Orientation.

Is it mandatory to attend the orientation week?

Yes, first-semester students who are enrolled at the Faculty of Economics and Management are obliged to attend all academic introductory sessions pertaining to their respective study programs.

Experience shows that students who had not attended their orientation week in past semesters tended to struggle greater than those who did attend. As a result, it is imperative for all first-semester students to attend their orientation week in order to connect with faculty personnel, meet fellow students, and ultimately successfully complete their studies.

I would like to arrive later in Magdeburg. Is this possible?

Students are urged to arrive in Magdeburg (and discover the OVGU campus) prior to the orientation week. No deferrals can be made for individual students.
